Summer Cycling in the Axarquia Region of Andalucia

For many cyclists the chance to escape the cold, wet and windy weather at home is something to look forward to. Temperatures in Southern Spain can climb into the mid 30’s in July and August. However, this does not mean that riding your bike is impossible. If a cyclist follows some sensible guidelines the cycling season can continue through the summer months. For tourists and locals alike the focus on training for events later in the year.

For some, the Axarquia is at its best in the summer months. Cycling on the quiet roads of the interior is a delightful alternative to a visit to the beach. Many visitors combine the two. Early starts make the most of the cooler weather before returning to their accommodation away from the heat of the day. This permits a cyclist to spend time recovering and relaxing with family and friends.

This is a unique time of year. The skies are a brilliant blue and there are clear views of the imposing mountains and vistas across the azure Mediterranean Sea.  The roadside is littered with the brilliant pinks and blues of the Jacaranda, Oleander and Bougainvillea flowers. These punctuate the verge to catch the eye and lift the spirits. Thankfully, despite an increase in visitors the provinces roads are still quiet and tranquil. Drivers are noticeably more laid back and tolerant than in other parts of the world.

Warm weather in Axarquia can occur any time of the year. However, temperatures and hours of sunshine peak from May to the end of September.  During these months, temperatures will be 25*c and above. July and August are usually the most intense. These average temperatures are usually for the hottest part of the day which is middle to late afternoon.

Cyclists can enjoy warm weather cycling more by following some simple advice and guidelines:

Acclimatise- Ease yourself in and take some basic precautions to enable you to continue cycling in the summer months.

Time of Day- Ideal times to ride are early in the day or in the evening. At these times, temperatures are lower and the sun less fierce.  The summer months present longer hours of daylight offering more opportunity to ride in the cooler hours. Many cyclists find the cool air created by the motion of cycling refreshing.

Hydration- Sounds obvious but it is easy to underestimate the amount of liquid required during the hot months. As, a general rule, if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Staying hydrated is crucial in warmer conditions and doing so will help your cycling performance considerably.  Carrying 2 big water bottles is recommended. These can be replenished in bars and shops that are located, in most villages and towns. Local cyclists are accustomed to filling bottles from the many fountains that line the roadside. Personally, speaking I have never had any problems with the fountain water.  However if you are unsure about this other options, as mentioned above are available. Ingesting electrolyte drinks also helps to replace minerals and salts lost from sweating. They support you riding at a higher level for longer. On completion of the ride continue to drink fluids to restore hydration levels in readiness for the next ride.

Appropriate Clothing- Clothing decisions are thankfully simple in the hottest months. Shorts and shirts are usually adequate.  Good quality cycling garments with easy wicking are needed to move sweat away from the body to keep you cool and comfortable. A zipped top is useful when climbing.

This can be lowered a little to allow some cool air as you increase your effort. Well- fitting shorts with a good chamois pad protects your sensitive parts when they make contact, with the saddle.  Quality eyewear with UV protection is a necessity. These protect your eyes from the bright summer sun and helps to keep you focus on the road ahead. Many riders aspire to the crisp tan lines of the classic cycling tan. However, it is sensible to cover all exposed body parts with a good quality sun protection to prevent sun burn. Most importantly, make sure you cover your neck and apply sun cream liberally to your nose.

Recovery- When your ride is finished a cold recovery drink is essential. This can be made in advance and left in the fridge.  One of the pleasures of the Axarquia region is the wholesome fresh food available in the shops and restaurants. In summer, there is an abundance of fresh fruit and vegetables to accompany your choice of protein. This will help muscles recover from your efforts on the bike.  You can also afford to treat yourself to an ice-cream, cold beer or whatever takes your fancy!

Reliable weather, quiet roads and stunning scenery cycling in the Axarquia in the summer months is great choice for a holiday.
